SAGE - Schools Aid for Gambian Education
Travel & Leisure Group have been involved in Schools Aid for Gambian Education for over ten years, helping with the education of Gambian children.
Although we support some children and contribute to their studies and incentive parties with work and money, Travel & Leisure Groups main purpose is to sponsor further education.
There is always satisfaction in charity work, but when we address our efforts to countries with very low standards of life we feel we can make a difference and help change their lives.
When our Company and others in the industry decided to invest in this project, we chose to concentrate on further education and support by funding SAGE rather than just paying for school fees for the little ones. We believe the country needs higher education to help people join their government, industry and hopefully build an infrastructure conducive to a more economically and financially stable society.
An example of this can be seen with Sulayman, who has been employed by The Gambia Revenue Authority (G.R.A) in Tax Officer Investigations. We are gratified to see someone sponsored by Travel & Leisure Group achieving a good and comparatively well paid position and we have hopes that he will go further still.
But none of this is easy, further education in Gambia is not cheap and sponsors are not keen on parting with hundreds of pounds year after year. Teenagers of 18 or more are not as lovable as the little boys and girls in their school uniforms.
You would find things are also hard for the students, there is no electricity and often there is also no water, it can be too hot, too wet or too cold. Malaria is always there waiting for them!
We received this wonderful thank you message from Sulayman:
“Dear All,
I write to thank you for the Gifts and all what you have been doing for me since from the day we come to know each other.
You have contributed immensely in my life career. I will never forget you in my life.I wish you all the best in all your endeavors in life.
Best Regards,
Sulayman”
We have many like these, all so moving and from the heart.
When we get them, it makes it all worthwhile.
