Marrakech is our next Bucket List Destination, a city of history and culture in beautiful Morocco. This thousand-year-old, evocative location provides a myriad of photo opportunities. Instead of half-interested smiles, said photos will bring with them demands for explanation.
The city is a cultural melting pot, containing both sandstone buildings and towering minarets. It’s also home to The Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre that hosts Amazigh, Arabic, and Moorish architecture. We dare you to walk through the streets of Marrakech and go more than five minutes without finding some piece of architecture to marvel at. With its ornate mosques and carved archways, the city really is a sight to behold.
No place on earth will engage all five senses as much as the city’s famous souks. You’ll find yourself walking into a whirlwind of vibrant colours, enticing smells, haggling voices, rich textures, and delicious local cuisine. This is the city’s truest soundtrack, and is at the heart of everything great about Marrakech. During the evenings, make sure to try out a rooftop restaurant so that you can watch the squares come alive below you. Fire-eaters, belly-dancers, astrologers, acrobats, and many other street entertainers will be showing off their skills!
A year-round destination, Marrakech always enjoys beautiful weather. The aforementioned heat wave, however, may make you wary of going during the height of summer. Instead, take a spring or autumn trip to enjoy the sunshine and completely bearable temperatures. If you’re visiting in the winter for warm temperatures and a crowd-free experience, remember that temperatures drop dramatically overnight.
