When you think of Mexico inevitably Riviera Maya or Cancun come to mind. In the second of our Mexico posts following on from last time, we talk to Paula from our Legal Department. She recently travelled with her family to the most popular tourist area in Mexico, Riviera Maya. Here is her experience…
TLG: It’s a long flight (over 11 hours), was it worth the journey?
PC: We flew on the new 787 Dreamliner with TUI. The aircraft was only three weeks old, so it was brand new. They are much more spacious, bigger windows and mood lighting. They also pump more oxygen through the cabin to make you feel fresher and help you sleep, a better experience for a long haul flight.
TLG: Riviera Maya has a lot to offer other than just its beautiful beaches, did you take in some of the sites?
PC: We had two young children with us so not as many as I would have liked. We did trips that would be more of an interest for them, so we didn’t do Chichen Itza this time (I will go back to do that). We are all keen snorkelers so we visited a couple of Cenotes. These are natural deep fresh water sinkholes especially associated with this region of Mexico. They are stunning and the snorkelling is amazing, if you are in the Cancun/Riviera Maya area they are a must and very cheap to visit.
TLG: Did you book with a tour operator, if so why?
PC: Yes we did, it was a better price on the holiday.
TLG: Did you stay at a resort? What made you choose it?
PC: We stayed at the Catalonia Riviera Maya Spa Resort. This hotel was recommended to us, we loved it because it was a small resort (only 400 rooms). It is located right on the beach and had several pools and beautiful gardens. It had a intimate feel to it and the staff were amazing and it’s fantastic for families.
TLG: Many people go on holiday to rest and relax, were you able to chill out and recharge your batteries?
PC: With children no, but we had an amazing time with them, they had the time of their lives, we did not stop!!!
TLG: Did you travel alone or with others?
PC: This was a family holiday, nine of us in total.
TLG: Did you eat out in the local restaurants? What was your favourite food on your holiday? Did you have Tacos & Tequila!!?
PC: We were all inclusive, not my favourite way to holiday, but with children it’s a cheaper option. I have to say the food was fabulous and there was lots of choice. Along with the buffet restaurants there were seven themed restaurants; including a Mexican, so we did have tacos and lots of tequila!
TLG: Working in the travel industry, you get to know a lot of resorts. Are there any resorts that you can recommend to someone looking to holiday in this area?
PC: What I liked about this area is that it’s gated at both ends of the Riviera Maya so it’s very safe. You can walk down to the marina which is full of bars, shops and restaurants. There are also bikes (free of charge) and golf buggies for a small fee to get around the resort. If you are travelling with children and want to get out and about, especially in the evening, this area is perfect.
TLG: What is your favourite thing about Riviera Maya?
PC: The beautiful beaches, the Cenotes, the resort is wonderful and not too far from Cancun if you want to visit.

TLG: What were the best moments of this week?
PC: So many! Swimming with dolphins at Delphinus was amazing. We did the Captain Hook boat trip, so if you are in the Cancun area I highly recommend this, so much fun. Swimming in the Cenotes, but most of all being with family in this most beautiful part of the world making fantastic memories….Priceless.
