The Main Street of America. The Mother Road. Route 66 is a living legend of American culture—and a definite bucket list destination. It stretches over two thousand miles from Chicago to Los Angeles. This road has a long and storied history as one of the country’s first transcontinental highways. For three decades either side of the Second World War, the highway transported folks from all walks of life, winding its way through the Midwest and Southwest.
Following its official decommissioning in 1984, the highway is now ‘Historic Route 66’. It may no longer be a main route, but it has retained much of its mythical charm because of the American people. Towns on the road once feared for their existence. But they’ve been able to maintain their position and business because of the great American driving vacation. Don’t forget that America is a continent, and one could conceivably never leave it during the course of their life.
Route 66 doesn’t just offer a scenic drive, kitschy Americana, neon signs and rusty truck-stops. It also offers a true cross-section of America. Beginning in Chicago, it goes through the cornfields of Illinois, Midwestern heartlands, and ends in the golden sunshine of Los Angeles.
Today, we look at four timeshare resorts along Route 66. Rest in luxury between stretches of open road!
Route 66: Chicago
Beginning in Chicago, we have Holiday Inn Club Vacations at Fox River Resort. Its location may be rural, but it’s a short drive to Chicago, where there’s plenty to do. For relaxing, on-site fun, you can fish on the resort’s seven-acre lake. You can even rent a boat and take a leisurely cruise across the water. When the sun begins to set, retire to your plush lake-view lodge. Options start with studios and end with spacious two-bedroom lock-off units, so there’s enough space for your party no matter the size.
Route 66: New Mexico
Next up, the Villas de Santa Fe in New Mexico. The Land of Enchantment waits to welcome you to its adobe buildings and majesty of the Sangre De Cristos Mountains. The all-suite resort is a mere seven minutes’ walk from the Georgia O’Keeffe museum. All units are attractively furnished in earthy tones that reflect the natural beauty of the location. If temperatures are cooler, you can get cosy next to your own fireplace. Alternatively, relax poolside with a refreshing drink on long summer days.
Route 66: Arizona
Heading out further west, we come to the deserts of Arizona. Just off Route 66 you will find the Wyndham Flagstaff, a collection of wonderful lodge-style units in a charming mountain town. At an elevation of seven thousand feet, remember not to lose your head! The on-site Bear Paw Recreation Centre provides entertainment for the whole family along with food and drink. The resort also offers mini-golf, outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, gym, and accommodation to fulfil your every holiday requirement.
Route 66: California
